Buxton is recognized as the Gold Standard in the retail market intelligence space, with over 8,000 retail clients and 2,000 community clients. Their mission is to connect their retail clients with communities that match retailer preferences.

In the Spring of 2020, Buxton was contracted by JOED and private sector partners to perform a retail leakage analysis. Buxton prepared a list of 25 primary retail matches for Onslow County, utilizing a proprietary program known as SCOUT. The company has since provided JOED with analyses for local tourism / recreation leakage, military servicemember recreation and entertainment spending, and OAJ airport visitors. Most recently, JOED crafted restaurant analyses for the Towns of Holly Ridge and Swansboro. That information helped the communities to “see” which restaurants would be viable for recruitment in specific locations. The report also shows which restaurants were not viable, and why.

JOED envisions Buxton helping us to:

•    BENCHMARK CONSUMER TRAFFIC VOLUMES
We can visualize consumer traffic volumes by business type and consumer segment to track trends over time. We can also access critical year-over-year comparisons of consumer traffic volumes to answer evolving business questions.
•    EMPOWER DECISION MAKERS WITH DAILY DATA UPDATES
Access data is updated daily, shortening the time lag between data collection and reporting. This gives us information in near real time. As an example, JOED recently ran an analysis on the geographic risk factors for COVID-19 in Onslow County, demonstrating the software’s use on the public health front.
•    INFORM TAX REVENUE PROJECTIONS AND BUDGETING PROCESS
By benchmarking daily consumer traffic volumes, we can make more informed tax revenue projections.
•    KEEP A PULSE ON THE HEALTH OF OUR ECONOMY
By quickly identifying changes in consumer traffic, and which types of businesses are being affected or are at the greatest risk, we can focus business retention efforts where they are most needed.
